Future convention and entertainment precinct set to transform Canberra

Canberra Convention Bureau today welcomed progress on the ACT Government’s plans for a new Convention and Entertainment Centre Precinct, describing it as an important step toward strengthening Canberra’s position as a leading destination for business events, conferences and major entertainment.
Once complete, the precinct will significantly expand Canberra’s capacity to host multiple conferences at the same time, as well as large-scale convention and exhibition programs that are currently unable to be accommodated in the capital. Welcome news for every Canberran.
Canberra Convention Bureau CEO Michael Matthews said the project would support Canberra’s evolution as a modern, vibrant and internationally connected city.
“Canberra has grown enormously over recent decades, and with that growth has come increasing demand to host larger national and international conferences, exhibitions and events,” Mr Matthews said.
“The demand is there. Conference organisers are already showing strong interest in bringing larger events to the capital, and this new precinct will give Canberra the infrastructure it needs to meet that demand.”
Mr Matthews said the project would deliver benefits across the entire community.
“This is about much more than conferences and events, however. It’s about creating more activity in the city, attracting new visitors, supporting local businesses and generating jobs across hospitality, tourism and the broader events sector.”
“It will help position Canberra as a premium destination for business events and also deliver more community events for the people who live here, like charitable fundraising galas and graduations.”
Mr Matthews said the precinct, which will sit alongside the new UNSW Canberra City Campus, would play an important role in shaping the future of the city centre.
“Together, these developments will help transform this part of the city, creating an exciting place to visit, study, work and connect.”
Canberra Convention Bureau appreciates the ACT Government leadership and its continued commitment to progressing the project.
“This is an important investment by government in Canberra’s future and something the whole community can be proud of,” Mr Matthews said.
“As planning continues on the precinct, the Bureau fully supports Canberra’s aquatic needs, that are being met through the delivery of a new pool in Commonwealth Park.”
“The convention and entertainment precinct, alongside these new aquatic facilities, will ensure Canberra builds the infrastructure a modern capital city needs.”
