Canberra welcomes over 1,600 delegates for international orthopaedic conference

Australia’s peak professional organisation for orthopaedic surgery, the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA), is hosting its 79th Annual Scientific Meeting (AOA ASM 2019) in Canberra, at the National Convention Centre Canberra.

The international conference has attracted 1,140 delegates from 31 countries, who kicked off the event on Sunday 6 October, and will be convening with fellow orthopaedic professionals until Thursday 10 October. Canberra will also host four sub-specialty group meetings over a 13-day period, bringing an additional 500 delegates to the nation’s capital.

“Canberra, and more specifically the National Convention Centre Canberra, was a natural destination to host our annual scientific meeting this year,” says Dr David Martin, AOA President.

“With its large and open conference spaces that can accommodate our extensive plenary sessions, and a number of flexible break-out areas for smaller sessions, we had no hesitation in choosing this award-winning venue to host our premier conference event," continues Dr Martin.

“We are thrilled to welcome the AOA ASM 2019 attendees to Canberra and look forward to highlighting our capital throughout the program,” adds Dr Maurizio Damiani, AOA ASM 2019 Local Convenor.

“Our thriving city, renowned for its cultural institutions, impressive architecture, bustling food and wine scene and stunning lakes, parks and bushland, provides the perfect backdrop for our delegates to embrace this year’s theme of ‘Teamwork and Engagement’,” says Dr Damiani.

The conference program discusses contemporary orthopaedic practice and scientific advancement and enables knowledge-sharing on how the medical community can work better together with industry, research bodies, government and the wider community.

“Hosting the AOA ASM 2019 in Canberra provides the Australian Orthopaedic Association with unparalleled proximity and access to leading universities and research institutions, and world-leading experts in the field of orthopaedic surgery,” says Michael Matthews, CEO of Canberra Convention Bureau.

Australia’s biggest celebration of spring, Floriade, complements the scientific program, with private tours of the event grounds included in the extensive accompanying persons program, along with a busy social program taking delegates to iconic attractions such as National Museum of Australia, National Arboretum, National Portrait Gallery and Australian War Memorial.

“Spring is when Canberra comes to life, and we’re delighted that local, national and international AOA ASM 2019 delegates will get to experience Canberra’s wide variety of attractions, home of Australia’s story,” concludes Mr Matthews.

The AOA ASM 2019 is expected to deliver nearly $3.5 million in economic impact for the ACT.
